Fears
I want all of us to be part of an experiment today. Could everyone please close their eyes? Now think of thething that you are most scared of. It could be a spider crawling up your arm, a
ssssnake ssslithering up your leg or a dark shadow creeping up on you. Now think about how your body is responding to your fear. Are your palms starting to sweat, is your breathing getting faster, is your heart starting to race. Now open your eyes. Good morning/afternoon Mrs. Van and fellow students. Fear is a little word with four letters that can completely ruin your day. What did you think of when I said the world fear? We all have fears and what may scare someone may seem silly to someone else. But fears are nothing that we should keep a secret so here I go. My name is Cara Stirman I am 12 years old and I’m terrified of heights (humph). There I said it, but I know I am not the only
one.
Did you know that a phobia is an extreme case of a fear? A phobia is a persistent, abnormal and irrational fear of a specific thing or situation that compels a person to avoid it. A person will suffer more anxiety with a phobia than with a fear. For example, even though I have a fear of heights and begin to feel nervous when I am asked to go rock climbing, I am able to overcome these feelings. I can get on an airplane to fly at heights of 30 to 39 thousand feet above the ground. Sooo, because I can control my feelings in some ways and I don’t let it rule my life, that makes my reaction to heights a fear and not a phobia. But trust me, I’m not about to start tap dancing on the wing of a plane.
There are many different types of fears. A person may be scared of dogs and rats, lions
and tigers and bears oh my! Chromophobia is the extreme fear of colors,
lachanophobia is the fear of vegetables. I know some of you may have that one.
Hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia, well whoever named this fear was just being
cruel not because it is so hard to say but because this is the fear of long
words. And guess what some people are even afraid of taxes. But that happens to
be a whole different speech.
Most of the time, not even the individual with the fear understands why they react so severely to the phobia. Phobias are caused by a person’s imagination, it's a reaction a person has to something that occurred in their past. There may be no actual risk of injury or harm to the person but they are unable to control how their mind and body reacts. How do you think these extreme fears would change your life?
As soon as a person sees or thinks about their phobia. Anxiety begins to take over. These symptoms are nothing to joke about. A person may experience dizziness, chills, nausea and even a rapid heartbeat. Just imagine not being able to control how your mind and body reacts to things like clowns, germs, or even the color yellow. For some people these symptoms can get so bad that they will refuse to leave the safety of their own home. Just imagine not being able to leave your house because you are scared of the sidewalk. I know this may sound funny but try putting yourself in their shoes.
Try to understand how a simple fear of spiders could develop into severe arachnophobia. Maybe a classmate screamed about a spider one day and everyone made fun of them. Then that person kept all of their thoughts and fears locked up inside until it got to the point that they would refuse to leave their house. Maybe we could have helped that person face their fear or overcome their fear
before it got too serious. Maybe we could have been part of the solution not part of the problem.
This is why I am standing here before you today. This is why I am asking you to accept your fears, embrace them and share them with others. The more we worry about what others may think the more we risk having of our fears develop into phobias. So here I go. My name is Cara Stirman I am 12 years old and I’m terrified of heights.
